One-to-one Maths Tuition restores Confidence and Motivation

In my experience there is lots of evidence to suggest that many students do not move on from the simplistic mathematical techniques introduced at primary school to the more rigorous, formal methods required at secondary school.

Paradoxically, the mental effort expended by the simplistic method is often greater than the formal one, putting the student at an disadvantage, especially in terms of confidence and self esteem. My approach in both mathematics and science tuition is to change this perspective, fix misconceptions and restore confidence.

I assess the student's level at the first lesson and move seamlessly onto improving confidence by ensuring a stream of continual successes by pitching exercises at the right level. Very close observation of the student as they tackle questions on a white board quickly exposes misconceptions. Continually drawing on past papers ensures familiarity with all the types of questions that can arise.
